We drove into Los Angeles over the weekend, to go visit the Pavilion of Wings with some friends. One big black butterfly immediately took to Shawn's USC hat. (Being that USC was just across the street...quite ironic.) It stayed affixed to his hat for a good 15 minutes while he romped about taking photographs. Quite a funny sight. My friends daughter went straight for the gusto...trying to catch them with her hands. So, how do you reason with a 3 year old when they are doing something bad? After the docent, kind of scolded her. I picked a flower for her to hold, and told her to "be patient...the butterflies will come to you". And they did. Unfortunately people around began to take notice of this genius technique, and began picking flowers too. When the docent began to get angry and yelled at them, they pointed to the innocent 3 year old child and said, "I saw her doing it". (Oh dear...my fault completely!) When the flower was taken away, a little screaming ensued. Which was a good indicator to leave. But you know...how much time can you spend with butterflies, in a contained crowded room full of strangers before you get a little flighty yourself?!
It's always fun to get into a little bit of trouble anyway, it makes for good stories.
The other evening I finally finished my knitted scarf. I'm terribly happy witht he way it turned out...it's just so colorful & nubby.

I added some new randomness to my sidebar recently. Things that made me smile this week.
Mo Kin a three year old xylophone player, and the trailer for I heart hucakabees.
Last Christmas my sister made everyone these beautiful beaded pins as gifts. Well knowing this was going to be a tedious task, I set out last evening to try my hand at making one of these. I ransacked my art supply closet, and pulled out my two boxes of sorted seed beads. Horrors...they weren't sorted at all. I had to pick out all of the little green seed beads one by one, and the whole time I was thinking about carpal tunnel, and how it would of been so much easier to just have run over to the craft store for a new bag of beads that was already sorted. But logic is a slight whispher in my creative mind. I was in full-blown right brain mode, which said go ahead and bead already! The first results were way below my expectations, but I did get the hang of the twisting. I'll give this project another go after a well-needed trip to the craft store. (Christina's pin is on the left, & my shoddy first attempt at leaves is on the right.) ****(KHW Jewlery is a great source of inspiration for other ideas using this twisting technique )
I'm working on re-designing my website, and would like to add a paypal type store selling artistic goodies like these pins, some of christina's lovely painted purses, some of my decoupage treasure boxes...etc. I've had this idea in the works for a long time, it's amazing how much prep. time it takes for these undertakings.

This is my parakeet Cornelius and his 15 minutes of fame...
He lives with three sassy ladies, named "the Imeldas". They don't know much about shoes, but the name seemed to fit all the same. Our little orphan Cornelius came to us a few months ago, although he loves to chat it up with the girls he's always been the loner of the group. He prefers to sit across the cage from the Imeldas, preferably in front of the mirror (he's vain!). At times when he thinks I'm not noticing him, he'll dance across the perches to his favorite tunes of Van Morrison while I'm cooking dinner. I caught him today checking himself out again, he's a funny little character...he is.

If something is not beautiful, it is probably not true. ~ John Keats
I've been busy hamming it up with my sister Christina while she's here visiting from Minnesota. Yesterday she officially declared a "girl's night out". We found ourselves doing the things we most love to do when visiting together: shopping, dining out at a nice restaurant, & talking the roof off!
Before we left, I made her pose in front of one of my favorite paintings of her's which hangs in the living room of our Aunt's house. It's called "the good mother".
My sister and I have a bit of a weakness for shoes, especially when they are round in the toes, stripey, and in the style of mary janes. These were found and nabbed in one of the local shops by Christina. I'm such a glutton for posting that... but, hey.

I love eclectic interior design and was so excited about Jacqui's recent post on Live Journal about her photo shoot with Women's Day magazine. Check it out! Thanks to Jacqui, I have a new found fascination with these asian chalkware busts. They used to be sold in China Town as souvenirs in the 30's- 40's. So beautiful!
Jacqui's home has also previously been featured in Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion magazine in the April/May 2003 issue. You can check out her scans from that issue here.

I just discovered a new family owned craftstore chain in my area, that has aisles and aisles of beautiful imported yarns. The temptation overtook me, I had to indulge. The hardest part was deciding which yarn combination to buy. In the end I chose an Italian yarn called Medley, from Berroco.
I decided to knit a skinny scarf since I'm still at the beginners stage of knitting. I'm learning through Debbie Stoller's infamous book. She explains things in a non-technical language that pretty much anyone could understand. I highly recommend it, if not only for the unusual patterns.
If you love hand-made scarves like I do, be sure to check out the incredible patterns page at berroco. They really have some unique special effects going on there.
At the moment my dining room table is filled with a sea of babies, for a shower I am helping to put together this weekend. The lucky wearer of the yellow ink splotched diapered baby wins. It's terribly uncomplicated...but the pins look (almost annoyingly) sweet. Which made fumbling around with tiny felt diapers and a hot glue gun, totally worth the effort.
If I had a big event in my life to announce like a wedding, baby, graduation, gallery opening, etc.
I would definitely have to try using this new fangled service called "photo stamps". Your photo on real postage. Really... it's about time someone thought of that.
