After weeks (no years!) of renovation on our house we decided to lay down our hammers last weekend to take a trip up to the Northern Coast in Oregon to get away! Our plane had been delayed two hours, so we arrived very late. We landed in Portland then rented a car and drove 2 hours on the dark forest lined roads into a small town where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean. We were so exhausted by the time we got to the hotel (at 2 a.m.), that all that was on our mind was SLEEP! Luckily our hotel had the most comfortable feather top beds in the world! (Which now I covet!)
Our first morning in town I got my first glimpse through the window, and was so in awe of the hundreds of Victorian homes sweeping over the hills in every direction. It was like staying in the "little San Francisco" of the Pacific Northwest.
Our usual morning sounds are those of the traffic outside the window, so we were so tickled to only hear the sounds of rain and sea lions in the distance chattering to themselves.
Exploring new places always gives me such a rush of energy. We made a wonderful new friend who drove us through the different neighborhoods and surrounding areas. She also showed us the "Goonies" House (which was filmed there), and showed us where the column was which was illustrated with the history of the area. Later we stopped off at the historic site of the Pete Iredale shipwreck that I had read about in Frommer's guide to Oregon. (I'm always such a tourist!)
That afternoon Shawn and I went exploring on our own, we drove back to the column and bought a little balsa wood toy plane that children (& mostly men, says the shopkeeper) buy to sail off the top. That's a big treat once you've climbed over 150 steps! It's worth the workout, since you can see a 360 view of the city, forest, and bay. Shawn readied his plane, and threw it over the top rail...But the wind caught it and swept it backwards landing it above our heads on the very top of the column. Even from the bottom of the column you could see the small wing teetering back and forth up there...So funny!
After driving over the bridge that leads to Washington, and back again we ate dinner at a very sweet place called the cannery cafe (we were the only one's in the restaurant!), which had huge glass windows that overlooked the bay. It was really peaceful, there was even a rainbow that snuck up on us just to top off all that beauty.
On Sunday we hurried ourselves along trying to get in last minute glimpses of the town, and shops. I was so happily surprised to spy some of My paper Crane's softies being sold in one of the local galleries (we also had spotted her softies at Kid Robot in New York this past October), as well as a few other familiar crafters work. Which was so fun to see in person!
We managed to spend some time in Portland before our plane took off for home. I was just dying to explore it some more though... weekends are too short a window in time for traveling, I think!

Thanks so much to all that have purchased necklaces in the past few days. I'll be working on some new ones, so if you missed out on this last batch don't feel bad they'll be other chances!

Inspiration 5: Drawn Talent
I'm so smitten with the illustrators that STEP inside Design magazine chose to feature in their recent Jan/Feb issue.
I love these works most for their unapologetic femininity.
