I just finished putting the finishing touches on the cds I made for cd swap 2, hosted by Piddleloop. I'll be happily sending out my swaps by the end of this week.

Over the weekend I found the most brilliant archive of illustrations from the New York Public Library. I was searching under Costume, and came to these beautiful Geisha Illustrations from the late 1800's.
Through my own cheekiness I decided that at least one of them should be sporting a pink ipod in my cd cover art. I think she looks amused, don't you?!

Speaking of amusing, earlier today I could hear my 4 parakeets going crazy in the kitchen so I walked in to investigate. A HUGE falcon was flapping madly outside the kitchen window where their cage is, trying to fly in (and eat them?!). I've seen some odd things with my birds, but this one was truly mad. I named the invading falcon "Mordecai", like this famous guy from the film the Royal Tenenbaums.

But if that wasn't exciting enough, I got the most wonderful surprise from ultra-fabulous Kim of Little Somethings today. I got so giddy I dropped everything else I was working on and went straight to decorating. Having pretty things to share is about just as bad as having extra money burning a hole in my pocket...so here goes:

1. This beautiful red lantern. I set it underneath the rose arbor in our backyard, where I can also enjoy looking at it through the window from my crafting table. Eeeee! She sent some round ball accordion lanterns too, more fun in the making to come!

2-3. Kim also sent the sweetest crochet butterfly towel, and sweet scented soap from the store where I covet everything! ( I was trying to be good there and not mention the name...because I seem to do that a bit much!)

Thank you so much Kim, you really made my day. Everything is so thoughtful, all of the things I love!

Also in #2 photo is a tiny bird painting that my sister recently sent along with my new favorite skirt as an early birthday present. It's really lovely, I plan to wear it on our big night on the town. More on that later!

Just recently Shell of Sacred Heart Arts sent the most fabulous collection of antique candy labels and other images that she had scanned and printed for collage work. They are so pretty I haven't had the heart yet to cut them up. I just like to stare at them on my inspiration board with all of my other goodies. I'm thinking that the images would make some really beautiful resin pendants. I saw a really great example of this on crafters coast to coast, and I've been dying to try it. These antique labels look so delicious though just as they are, don't they!?!

Over the weekend I had a(nother) momentary lapse of sanity, and purchased this yellow canary. I know...I said no more birds...after this one I'm really finished, I swear. I must have an insatiable need to nurture things. I was spurred on by this really great bird shop that I found recently, where I noticed that the owner had a Chinese bamboo cage like one I already had with a bird actually living in it. It was all downhill for me after that, my mind was burning with the thought that I couldn't have this fantastically ornate cage just sitting in my living room empty. So when I was going to the pet store to buy food I came home with this little guy. I named him Pipen, after one of my favorite little hobbits. The bad thing about birds, is that they are really messy eaters (even when they are eating out of really cute tiny porcelain Chinese cups), so I had the idea to sew up a really flashy looking seed guard out of some red silk brocade I had recently purchased. I quite like it, this is one bird with posh surroundings.

My last post about the artwork by the duo "container", really inspired me to just stop for a moment and pull out my sketchbook and draw those crazy doodles that I've always loved. Further inspiration came from a recent Urban Outfitters catalog, where they use clip art over photography. So I played a bit with that idea using a photo I recently took of Jerry sleeping (click on the photo to view larger). I like it. It makes me want to redesign my whole website now with edgy doodles & collage mixed with photography. The doodles also really lend themselves well to making new print gocco screens too of course. A few days ago, I played around with using one of them as an abstract background...then layering it with metallic butterflies. They're destined to be included in September scrap packs, with a few other special goodies...too soon to reveal, but never too soon to tease!

I stumbled on a really great link today (via Vivnsect) and feel compelled to share!

Check out the Hotel Fox's website. It's an enchanting urban hotel concept based on the stylings of street art and graphic design, located in Copenhagen Denmark.

In their own words it consists of:
61 rooms, 21 artist, 1,000 ideas
Each room is an individual piece of art. From whacky comical styles to strict graphic design. From fantastic street art and Japanese Manga to simply spaced out fantasies. You will find flowers, fairytales, friendly monsters, dreaming creatures, secrets vaults and

I'm mad in love now with the work of the artist duo Container. (Some examples of why I am so smitten can be found here, here, and here.) They are also featured on the Project Fox website in a fantastic little video under the heading "the players". Check it out...eye candy...eye candy...I really feel inspired now to create something.

I think these two correspondence sets I put together last night may have been slightly influenced by a behind the scenes look at Tim Burton's "Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory" that was playing in the background while I made them. Johnny Depp's high pitched Wonka voice and the Tim Burton-esque song choices were a little freaky, but the visuals themselves were pretty delightful. The colors and shapes of the sound stage were so wonderfully brilliant and over saturated.

The other night I watched "the girl in the cafe" (on HBO's in-demand service). It was a fascinating nervously charged romance that revolved around the G8 summit. I had heard a lot of good buzz about it, and was so hyped that it was written by the same people who were the masterminds behind "Love Actually" & "Four Weddings & A Funeral". Now that's a winning start! If you have the chance, I highly recommend it...I haven't been able to stop thinking about this film for days now.

I also have to take a few moments to share these goodies that arrived in my mailbox last week.

1. A sweet surprise from Leslie, with two of her newly designed notecards (soon to be sold at The Paper Princess, this August). The one with the lanterns was inspired by something I had sent her recently...so I was really tickled! In fact they are so fabulous, I was ready to buy more this morning before I realized her shop wasn't ready yet!

2. A mini collage print of Hope's piece "Flying High" (that I am mad in love with), purchased from her online shop Paper Scissors Soul.

3. Super cutie "Mary Janes" cards (Illustrated by Giao), that I purchased last week from the Walrus & the Carpenter. They are so darling, I adore the bright colors!

New projects are brewing...will post again sooner than usual!

These photos (click on them to view larger) are from one of my favorite books Textile style by Carol Clifton-Mogg, which has forever been lying open on my coffee table. I love looking through it and finding a new page to display. It's also inspired many purchases in my house, from embroidered shawls to carefully hand-sewn quilts. It's latest inspiration, occurred on Friday while I was having a bit of a shopping seizure...I found this great set of colored linens at crate and barrel. Soon I plan to have my way with them and transform them into pillows. They've got a really nice nubby texture, resembling raw silk. Sometimes I go there to buy large cloth napkins to re-cover the seats on my dining room chairs as well, they have the swankiest fabrics. (So forget shopping for fabric at JoAnne's.) Anthropologie (of course) always has a really great selection beautiful dishtowels in their store as well (like these)...
Shown left are my embroidered swirly strawberry & Scotty dog towels that I purchased from there. I have them hanging in lieu of real cabinet doors while I'm waiting for our kitchen to finish being renovated. Hiding ugly things I don't care to look at with cute fabrics is one of my magical powers. Hey!

The Liquid shop is up and running again. I've been a paper making junkie this weekend...but now I need a rest. I'll leave you with one more of the delicious images from the textile book. Happy weekend!
