In the heart of Downtown Los Angeles
7.24.2008
Our next stop after Atlanta was Los Angeles, for the California gift show. I met Anahata there, who had just returned home from her Caribbean adventure.

One of our first bits of business was to hit the L.A. Flower district to make arrangements for the show.

It didn't take much meandering around the booths before we found some amazing bouquets, at absolute steals. How do they price them so low?!

We stayed in the heart of downtown Los Angeles where we were working for the show, but found some amazing hidden gems in the city to spend our free time.

Poolside at the hotel Figueroa, was our evening bliss out. They played the same worldly flavored beats night after night, it seeped under my skin like a second home.

One more peek at the booth in Atlanta, since some of you asked in the comments to see more...

Eli, Brennan (the aforementioned "glitter pimps") and I felt so surprised, and honored to receive this award for Papaya's booth display.

Hello from Atlanta
7.11.2008

I'm writing tonight from Atlanta, Georgia... it's been a whirlwind here at the home & gift market. I had been working hard the previous week designing the layout of the PaPaYa! booth back home in Southern Oregon, it was an amazing process to see it all come together exactly as I'd dreamed it would. The PaPaYa! boys a.k.a. the glitter pimps ( no one leaves home from work without a few tell tale pieces of glitter on them from all of our sparkly treasures hence the nickname) worked hard this week hanging all of the products on the walls. I got to come in and fine tune with the final feminine touches, like flower arrangements and faux wrapped gifts in our line of fine wrapping papers. I love it when a plan comes together!

Here's a look at our booth, more to come soon...

"Oagers are like onions, but artists are like Matryoshka dolls."
6.18.2008

This very clever quote (10 points if you can guess which movie) and gorgeous set of hand painted dolls were left for me on my desk in our studio at PaPaYa! this Monday from Anahata before she left for her summer trip to Belize. I love her thoughtful ingenuity, it was a brilliant start to my week.

I'll leave you all with the creative to-do list she left for me, feel free to pick a few ideas for yourself too:

Use Fridays for creative studio time.
refill your cup.
Eat Chocolate (preferably ginger).
drink coffee.
close doors.
make mess.
do artwork for you.
take pictures of mess.
email them to me along with good jokes.
go to garage sales and get dirty.
and do something scary every day.

make your mark
6.14.2008

After shooting photographs of Teesha Moore's zine Art and Life for the Summer edition of PaPaYa!'s catalog last week I couldn't stop feasting my eyes on her pages upon pages of inspiring quotes and indulging on the great tips she writes about her creative process. I most loved her advice on how to get past a creative block. "Start by making a mark."

Simple advice that really resonated with me this weekend.

Anahata gave me two of her favorite signo white uniball pens to try a few months ago. This was the first time I had the chance to use them, and was so thrilled. They really add so much dimension to drawings, I love how the linework pops against the bright prismacolor inks.

Selina Lake's: Bazaar Style
6.01.2008
(photos via: Selina Lake's online portfolio)

Just before I left for my recent trip to New York, Selina Lake's new book:
Bazaar Style: Decorating With Market and Vintage Finds arrived in my mailbox. I was smiling from ear to ear, as it's just my cup of my tea. It showcases unique spaces decorated with vintage, retro and flea-market finds. Total Bliss!

(photos via flickr community: bazaar style)

I first came across Selina's interior styling portfolio through flickr, when she added me as a contact. (Can you see, why I love that site so much??!!) She's created a group there to showcase rooms that have been inspired by the bazaar style aesthetic, and to answer questions about her book. You can join her group here, and be inspired too!

To gain more insight into Selina Lake's profession as an interior stylist, you can also read a fantastic interview she did with one of my favorite design bloggers Decor 8.

Julia Rothman: how to make repeat patterns
5.31.2008

I was click, click, clicking through the brilliant eyes of Lisa Congdon's photostream on flickr last night, and came across this photo she posted of one of her paintings hanging alongside Julia Rothman's whimsical wallpaper in someone's home. (See upper left corner of my photo collage). I fell in love with the open white shelving against the bright illustrations.

By coincidence I came across Julia's website this morning, and fate came knocking at my door for another artist inspired blog post.

Her wallpaper can be purchased through Wall Collection, which also is a customizable site where you can upload and purchase your own designs for your walls. (I'm really into pattern design these days, how exciting!)

Julia also keeps a very inspiring illustration blog that features a new art book everyday: Book by its cover.

Recently she also was a guest writer for Design Sponge, and posted a really great tutorial on how to make repeat patterns (no photoshop necessary!).

To learn more about Julia Rothman where you can also purchase her work & patterns, visit her site www.juliarothman.com.

keep in Mind: Illustrations by Irana Douer
5.27.2008
I first came across Irana Douer's artwork a few years ago through the live journal art community, and ever since then have been keeping her in mind.

I love how Irana's illustrations project so much emotion and feeling through her use of color, linework, and vivid smudges. She's constantly carving out new ways to express herself through experimenting in various mediums. Sharing creative projects like making clothing out of paper, and turning the characters of her illustrations into real photographs using models and colorful wigs.

I admire how she's a forward thinker, so original and intriguing!

You can see more of Irana's photography and illustrations on flickr, buy originals, and keep up with her latest projects on her website keep in mind. She also runs a monthly based online art magazine Ruby Mag
