Things I love: Ralli Quilts

Sunday, August 15th, 2010

My aunt and I found these amazing Ralli Quilts at an LA tradeshow two years ago… ralli quilts (also spelled rilli, rilly, rallee or rehli) are traditional quilts made by women in Sindh, Pakistan and western India. these quilts (shown) combine vintage fabric from the 60′s and 70′s that are quilted together with fine hand-stitching and often feature bright colors and bold patterns. the name itself is taken from the word “ralanna”, meaning “to mix or connect”.

The colors of the quilts at the show were downright mesmerizing, all piled up practically to the ceiling, 100′s of them! I remember thinking at the time, that the prices seemed outrageous (even at wholesale)… but knowing the history of the pieces now I have a much deeper appreciation, these types of handmade arts passed across the generations are really priceless.
